Brad was in Tokyo last week and we went out to lunch and dinner with him on Friday.
Lunch on Friday was Udon Noodles in Roppongi.
After lunch, we dropped by Don Quixote to get some snacks for Brad's talk and Foobar.
Then for dinner, we had a "meating" at Togarashi in Nishiazabu. . .MEAT!
Turns out this is the first time that Brad's had a "meating" like this, but our choice in establishments meant that if he liked meat, he would love eating here. And at least to our eyes, it seemed that he did. The cow we had was a four year old female cow called Ayako. And boy, she was a GREAT cow.
Got to talk a lot about LiveJournal and Seattle. shigeta しげた was pretty excited, I asked him about it and turns out he's really into OpenID. That started an interesting lecture as Brad gave a session of OpenID for dummies. And yes, Brad came all the way out to Tokyo just to have Coldstone icecream for desert. Though, we did get a good Google Maps/drunk/coldstone story out of it.
It being Christmas and everything, I thought that it was about time to open the Wii that I had gotten three weeks ago. With help from sekimura and Satoshi たにもと, the Wii was set up in a conf room and a few others joined for a good old tennis tournament. I smashed my finger against a wall, but thankfully the controller was safe (my finger kinda hurts still). Hopefully we can have a year end tournament with the whole SAKK gang. In the New Year, we'll show the folks in SF, that in fact they are the SF branch of SAKK.
Woke up before noon and had lunch, Garth was kind enough to take us out to see the town and we first went to the Alamo Square Park and took in the flea market there and the Seven Sisters. We then went to the Golden Gate Park where we grabbed a four person cycle/cart and went around the park. The highlight was either, the downhill to see buffaloes on the west side of the park, or the climb back up to return our cart. Satoshi took the wheel for this part and we all huffed and puffed in unison. . .in Japanese. I was getting ready to start the celebrations, but Satoshi had a look of panic on his face and he dismounted quickly to and went running down the hill to find his passport. The remaining three of us took the cart back and then found Satoshi with his happily found passport. We then went over to see the windmill and then the Pacific. . .and beyond that. . .home!!!
My friend from junior high, John picked me up and we drove out to Berkely for a barbeque at a his friends' place. John's a lawyer and the five other lawyers there were all public defenders. For some reason I felt safe, which is weird, since the police make me awkward. Usually by the time I need the public defenders, something has gone bad. I also met a woman from a Ad Agency there and we had a fairly lively conversation about Vox. She had worked last year with a Japanese company and had heard about Movable Type from that experience, I promised her invitations to Vox.
Atsushi and Satoshi checked into the hotel they'll be staying for the duration of their stay in the US. Afterwards we met up with my brother (Yuji) and then proceeded to march across downtown to go to some Indian. We walked by the Apple Store and because you can't really just walk by the Apple Store, we went inside to look at the Mac Pro, which looks just like the Power Mac G5. We asked the Apple Store employee what the difference between the two were, his answer was,"the Mac Pro has two drive bays." We needed more, so we asked for his sales pitch and he came back with,"try it for yourself." We tried but got bored too soon and so Atsushi and I proceeded to look at some bags and enjoy the feeling of not buying something that we wanted but did not need.
When I usually go out to Indian in Japan, it is all about curries and naan, but we had a lot of barbequed chicken and mutton, and then a lot of rice. Thankfully, we got a ride back to the hotel and I immediately crashed. I woke up at 0400 and noticed that the broadband at the hotel was out. Luckily CNET next door has a free Hotspot.
The three of us had a light breakfast and headed to the office. We had a few good conversations and worked on. The Vox engineers and Garth invited us out to lunch, so we went out for mexican food close by.
First two days of the trip. The flight goes uneventfully and nothing too exciting happens at immigrations. I wait for Atsushi and Satoshi picking up their luggage at the carousel and remind them a few hundred times that checking luggage in is evil. Satoshi brought some nail clippers, I try to explain Wallgreens to him. There was a huge cage being pushed through customs with a dog barking the whole time in it. The dog was let into the country, but his food didn't pass the cut. We jumped on the BART and marvelled at how loud the train was. We were going to discusss how loud trains are in the US, but we couldn't hear each other so we just made faces.
Also, you can't really hear the conductor announce the stations. I couldn't figure out why he was so shy, I guess he didn't want to bother anyone.
We got off the BART at Powell and headed towards SAUS. There might have been a more convenient stop, but we really wanted to walk by the Moscone Center. . .to take pictures of the WWDC. Speaking of which, was anyone else a bit disappointed by the announcements at the WWDC? Sure, the Intel transition was completed, but for some reason I was hoping for the Xserve and Power Mac to have the Intel Core2Duo in it. Oh well, Parallels announced a new version, so I upgraded that at least.
We got to SAUS and took a picture outside the office. Once inside Stella greeted us with a couple barks and then a few licks just to keep things safe. I admired her graceful walk and took a picture of her for all her fans in Japan. We went to get Thai food for lunch and had some discussions after lunch. Satoshi crashed at around 1700.
We woke Satoshi up and Randy took the three of us out for some Italian food at North Beach. We all looked pretty ragged, so Randy dropped us off at our respective hotels. Randy's Subaru accelerated pretty impressively, I guess the "WRC" on the back of the car stands for something.
We had a meeting immediately on the second day and got a lot of things sorted out (I'll write about that elsewhere). Garth took us out to lunch, we were looking for a Cajun place, but couldn't find it, so we went Mexican instead. On the way out from the Mexican place, we noticed that the Cajun place was next door.
