Went up to the north coast of Honshu for a short weekend trip (full set of photos here). Got there past noon on Saturday, went into Toyama City to see Plastinated bodies. After that went up to relax in some hot springs. Day two was spent hiking up Hachiro-zaka next to Shoumyoudaki in the Tateyama National Park. Went a bit further than we originally planned, but the trek was well worth it thanks to the amazing views.
Shoumyoudaki is the tallest (longest?) non-continuous waterfall in Japan (it's made of three waterfalls).

Went out to Kawasaki yesterday to watch the finals of the 3rd World Cup of American Football. The finals were between the and Japan. Japan had won the two previous World Cups and in fact has never lost a game in the Cup.
This was the first time that the US was organizing a team. The team was compromised of players that had all just graduated from college. The head coach (John Macovich, he coached the Chiefs for a few years in the 80's) asked for all NCAA and NAIA coaches to give him the names of two seniors from their team and then made the roster of 45 based on that list. The team was a mix of players from all levels of the NCAA and NAIA and had a three week camp to prepare for the Cup.
The US beat Korea 77-0 and Germany 33-7 to reach the finals and Japan had beaten France and Sweden both with scores of 48-0.
My friends and I were expecting two results from the game:
Our reasons for the second expected result were from the third and fifth place games, Germany had beaten Sweden 7-0 and Korea had beaten Fance 3-0 to win third and fifth place respectively. Those games were played on Saturday in some real pre-typhoon heavy weather and with the typhoon off the coast, the weather wasn't supposed to be good. However, besides a bit of a drizzle, the weather was not bad.
- A blow out win by the US
- A extremely low scoring game that could go either way.
With the weather being decent, a blow out win by the US could have been in the cards. While the team was cobbled together, they did have a good number of players that had played at the highest level of college ball in the US. The US offensive linemen were big, averaging 192.9 cm and 133.7 kg, while the Japanese offensive line was in the 110-120 range with the defensive line having players that were even smaller. Their running backs were also big and their receivers weren't short also.
The game started inauspiciously enough (for the Japanese), on the first play out of the huddle, the Japanese QB threw up a wobbly ball that was easily intercepted, the US got the ball and completed a short drive for the TD. The game tightened up from there though. The Japanese rotated three QB's each with different traits (accurate passer, scrambler, strong arm) and gave the US a lot of different looks. The Japanese team, spread the team on all plays with three receivers, and their tight end in different locations, they usually played with one back and ran a lot of option or play action plays. By using the width of the field. . .it seemed that they kept the US team off balance and at the end of the second half, Japan was leading 10-7 after the US missed a short field goal with time running out that would have tied things up.
The second half was alo intersting, but both teams had problems finishing their drives. The Japanese quarterbacks weren't tremendously accurate and their drives fizzled. While the US quarterback was a bit more accurate than the Japanese ones, most of his completed passes were short ones and they weren't accurate enough that the receivers had a chance to gain many yards after the pass (eg. a short quick pass to the sideline thrown a bit high, so the receiver has to jump to catch it). The US running back also fumbled the ball a couple of times but, the US did manage to tie the game with a field goal.
In the fourth quarter, Japan had a chance to go for the lead with a field goal, but the kick was blocked, in the ensuing mess somehow Japan got the ball back with a first down. Japan went on to score a touchdown. . .and I was hoping the win, but at the end of the quarter the US finally put together a decent drive and tied the game.
The game went into overtime and with international American football seemingly played with US college rules, they went into the each team gets a chance system of OT.
OT was being played on the other side of the stadium, so we moved down their. In the first OT, both teams got a field goal. In the second OT, Japan got their field goal attempt blocked and then the US went for their attempt, which I captured on video.
The final result was unfortunate, but I really enjoyed the game, while I wouldn't predict that this means that the American Football World Cup will be like the FIFA World Cup someday, it was a great way to spend the afternoon.
The stats are here.
My main digital camera at the moment is the lovely Powershot G7, looks like there is a Vox group for it now. Sweet.
Went out to Nogizaka with Atsushi and Goya to sit down for some lunch. We had some hamburg steaks at the Steak House Hama.
It was an inspired choice, a great way to end the working week. We had a great "meating," with the only downer being the heavy smoking in the after meal lounge.

。。うん。
The Italian Place on the Hill, a three minute walk from the SAKK office, it's pretty packed for lunch, but definitely a guaranteed great lunch if you can get it in.

We decided to go to the Spanish/Latin American place for lunch yesterday. I had never been there, but I had heard rumors of the large helpings. They had dishes like Paella, Taco Rice (an Okinawan dish which is basically a hard shell Taco on rice), hamburger stew, and etc. Being into the hamburg steaks, I went for the stew.
The helpings were large as advertised. In fact previously when my colleagues had gone, the waiter told one of my colleagues that asked for an extra large helping, that the normal helping would be more than enough.
We went to Daoxiaomian today with Garth and Lisa.
Entering Week 2 of 2007, here are some hilights food wise from the first week, not including the goodness on New Year's.
My first bowl of ramen this year was at Tenka Ippin. Tenka Ippin's famous soup is a broth, extremely thick stuff. I usually order the ramen+fried rice set, after finishing the noodles, I'll drop the fried rice into the broth. The ramen here is great, but it's thick enough that I'm ok to wait another year before I come back.

Crab Fried Rice at the usual Chinese place, I prefer their usual Fried rice.

Daoxiaomian at Mr. Ching's, it was good as usual, but it made me want more. Anyone want to go to Xian Daoxiaomian at Daikanyama?
Seven Herb Congee which is traditional fare for the seventh of January. I went to my folks' place for this. This year, instead of having seven herbs, my Mom steamed seven kinds of vegetables with sake, very tasty.
I had Natto-soba at Sangou-an for lunch yesterday. A thirty second walk from my house, the noodles here are superb.

fumiakiy just HAD to have his Tendon (Tempura rice bowl) today, so we braved the winter rain to go down to Akasaka and Tenshige. Mr. Japan Tobacco (YUJI) and I had Kakiage-don's and Atsushi and fumiakiy had their Tendon. The mix was pretty oily, but it was overall a tasty experience. We went by Starbucks on the way back to the office. To prepare to get drenched. And drenched we were. . .
Just some random Tempura related trivia from Wikipedia:
"Batter-coated deep frying was introduced to the Japanese by Portuguese missionaries during the 16th century. The word tempura derives from the Portuguese missionaries' custom of eating fish during Lent due to the Catholic proscription against eating meat during this period: in Latin, "ad tempora quadragesimae", meaning "in the time of Lent"."
I've heard the theory that the name Tempura comes from the Knights Templar also, perhaps the holy grail is in the batter. Or perhaps more important:
"Western chefs frequently include tempura dishes on their menus but seldom with 'authentic' results. This largely stems from a misunderstanding about mixing the batter which, in classic cookery must be beaten until homogeneous. Good tempura batter is mixed with chopsticks, but only for a few seconds. This leaves numerous lumps in the mixture and results in the unique tempura structure when cooked. Also crucial is that tempura batter be made freshly, with ice-cold water, in small batches."

End of the year part for MS Basketball. The run last week was pretty hard core for all the wrong reasons, it was the first timet that I had been in a few months and I was almost regretting it, thankfully the run yesterday was a lot more fun. There was a lot of running as usual, and I twisted my ankle and went tumbling another time pretty hard, but basketball is where it is at. Afterwards was the year end party at Cafe Mangrove in Ebisu. Good times and good food, hopefully I can play more ball in 2007, though I doubt it. For now. .. skiing, are we going to Hokkaido?
