Went out to Karaoke the other day with Yu-ching and Michelle. Near the end of our time their, the two mentioned wanting to hear the original of a cover song that they had on their recent trip to Taiwan. Yu-Ching mentioned that it was a Southern All Stars song, so I put in the song below and this was the correct original. . . so far so good.
The title of the song translated into English is "the Midsummer's Fruit," and is one of the most popular songs of the group that's been one of the most popular bands in Japan for over thirty years now (and announced recently that they would be going on a hiatus for an indefinite length at the end of this year).
The cover that I thought they were referring to is this song, which was hitting the streets in China when I lived there ten years ago. The song was released by a Hong Kong singer and was pretty popular at the time and in English the song title translates to "Everyday I love you a little more" which I could have translated as "More Today than Yesterday". However, they told me that the song that they heard was a recent duet.
The song they were referring to was this one on the left from an album by a Hong Kong (Fiona Sit) singer that was just released in April. Besides having different singers, lyrics and title, this one is sung in Mandarin, the previous song being in Cantonese. The name of the song (probably) translates into "Copied Recollections."
It's been twenty years since the original Japanese version was released and there have been three Chinese covers (that I've found) with different singers and lyrics, though all four versions sing about some type of love. While I like the original the most, I believe that the covers have done it justice. There was a pretty prominent (in the Youtube search results) cover of the Japanese original by some hosts as PR for their host club. Find it at your own peril, as I choose not to violate your senses with it, that definitely does not do the original any justice.
Finally, here's an instrumental cover from another Chinese group, the song starts at the 2:40 mark.
